It's the First World War. Australia is in the grip of an economic crisis. Political extremism is on the rise.

 

​Rose is one of Australia’s first female lawyers.  Her brother-in-law Joe is a political extremist charged with arson and treason. He claims that he is innocent of all charges.  Rose doesn’t agree at all with his politics, but she defends him out of family loyalty. 

 

Rose had never doubted her ability as a lawyer before, but wonders if she is equipped to handle a case like this. And is Joe as innocent as he claims?

Joe is married to Rose’s only sister, Carmela.  Carmela has always saved Rose when she was in trouble and now it is her little sister’s turn to reciprocate… if she can.

​Rose's courtroom opponent is William, a Police Prosecutor. A close friend of William’s was murdered by people involved in Joe’s group, and he is out for revenge.
